The first Wednesday in June is Global Running Day, an annual event that allows runners to shout from the mountaintop their passion for running. In the spirit of solidarity with the worldwide running community of which I am a proud member, I’m going to celebrate the day by putting in a few miles and sharing several reasons why I run.
I run because I must. It gets my blood flowing and my brain churning. Things always seem much clearer after a good run.

I run because I’m a mother. I am leading by example, showing my daughters the importance of keeping one’s body strong and healthy. I also want them to understand that it’s not about finishing first – which, if I’m completely honest, will never happen – it’s just about finishing.
I run because I want to make myself proud and prove to that girl who sucked at all things athletic during school that she actually can JUST DO IT.

I run because I don’t qualify for the other 1% club.
I run for the camaraderie. Whether it’s my real life sole mates, or my virtual running buddies on Instagram and Facebook who are a major source of motivation and encouragement, running friends rock!

Prague Marathon Relay with @Kera77pl (l) and @Natsluxelife (r).
I run because I like food. And after a long winter and quarantine filled with fat-laden comfort foods and snacks, it’s time to pick up the pace and crank up the mileage.
I run because I want to challenge myself and test my body. Gotta remind my body sometimes that I run it; it doesn’t run me. #irunthisbody
I run because of the awesome races available. Races where you run all the miles and drink all the wine, Disney races, Rock ‘n’ Roll races. To paraphrase a popular song, I guess you could say I’m all about that race, ‘bout that race.
I run because I can’t resist the promise of nice swag and great bling.
I run because I want to see the world. As ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes says, “I run to explore…to escape the ordinary…to savor the trip along the way.”
I run because of the bragging rights. 26.2, 13.1, the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza, Jerusalem… Been there, run that.

I run because I like the cool gear. Whether it’s fashionable running clothes or the latest performance shoe or tech, I’m here for it.
I run because, hey, I’m kinda crazy. What can I say.
I run because it’s a great opportunity to think and wander, wander and think.
I run because I can. I may not be the fastest runner, but I eventually cross the finish line. And to prove Audrey Hepburn right, that “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’”.
Happy Global Running Day! Now get out there and get your run on!
